Brooklyn-based indie rock trio We Are Scientists formed in 2000 around the talents of guitarist/lead vocalist Keith Murray, bass player Chris Cain, and drummer Michael Tapper. After building a small but devoted following through their epic live shows and a series of three self-released EPs, the group signed with Virgin Records. Their major-label debut, With Love and Squalor, was released in early 2006.
The band's name is not taken from the Cap'n Jazz song of the same name. It was inspired by an awkward conversation with a U-Haul employee who was inspecting a van that the band had rented. The U-haul employee, attempting to make polite conversation, asked the three bespectacled band members if they were brothers. They said no. He asked if they were scientists. They told him that they were musicians, not scientists. To this day, they regret telling the truth.
They toured with Kaiser Chiefs at the end of 2007.
It was announced on the 1st November 2007 that drummer Michael Tapper would be leaving the band prior to their UK tour. He has not been replaced. Instead, the band has continued to operate as a duo with supporting musicians.
It has been rumoured that Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has been asked by the band to "fill in" as their part-time drummer on their recent UK tour.
The bands latest album entitled Brain Thrust Mastery debuted in the UK album charts at number 11 after its release on the 17th March 2008
